Why is the Galápagos Islands so rough?
The Galápagos lie in the Eastern Pacific, 485 nautical miles (898 km) west of the mainland of South America. A 2022 paper in Revista Politécnica, using wave data for 1979 to 2015, says the wave conditions are affected mainly by waves and winds from the south-east, and puts the 100-year significant wave height at 3.8 m. Its three largest events were swells from southern storms moving south to north, on 19 June 2006, 4 July 2014 and 2 May 2015. The speedboats are often called ferries, but Moon Travel Guides says they are designed for speed rather than stability.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
