Is the Gulf of Finland rough? What to expect on the crossing
Sometimes, mostly in autumn and early winter. The Helsinki to Tallinn ferries cross a narrow arm of the Baltic Sea in about 2 hours, and in a storm the seas build: the highest significant wave height measured off Helsinki is 5.2 m. A calm summer crossing is a very different trip.

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Gulf of Finland is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.
Key facts
- The Gulf of Finland is a gulf, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Narrow gulf, wind along its axis.
- Conditions are reported roughest in January, October, November and December.
- The calmest months are usually April, May, June, July and August.
- It is also known as Suomenlahti / Soome laht / Finska viken.
Why does the Gulf of Finland get rough?
The Gulf of Finland is a narrow west-to-east arm of the Baltic Sea, about 400 km long and 70 to 130 km wide, with an average depth of 38 m. Wind along it can raise real seas: the highest significant wave height measured off Helsinki is 5.2 m, recorded in a south-westerly storm in November 2001 and again in an easterly storm in 2012, and the narrow shape is not expected to let waves grow much higher. Near the coast the archipelago takes the energy out. In the open-water months of 2016 to 2019, a coastal buoy off Suomenlinna averaged 0.33 m, against 0.81 m at the buoy in the centre of the gulf.
When is the Gulf of Finland roughest?
Autumn and early winter are the roughest. Along the Estonian coast, wave intensity follows the wind: it is highest in late autumn and early winter and smallest in late spring and summer, and the Gulf of Finland shows a second peak in October. Wave reanalysis data (ERA5) for the central gulf off Helsinki agrees: it ranks December, January and November highest and May lowest. Parts of the gulf can freeze from late November to late April, and complete freezing usually occurs by late January.

The crossings that cross it
| Route | Typical duration | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Helsinki to Tallinn | About 2 to 2.25 hours | Tallink's MyStar and Megastar take 2 hours. Eckerรถ Line's ferry takes 2 hours 15 minutes. |
| Helsinki to Tallinn on Victoria I | About 4 hours | Tallink's slower ship covers the same water in about twice the time. |
| Helsinki Market Square to Suomenlinna | About 15 minutes | The HSL ferry runs inside the Helsinki archipelago, where waves are attenuated. |
What helps on this crossing
- Take the shortest crossing you can. Tallink's MyStar and Megastar cross in 2 hours and Eckerรถ Line's ferry in 2 hours 15 minutes, while Victoria I takes about 4.
- Choose your season if you can. Waves are smallest in late spring and summer and highest in late autumn and early winter.
- Use the sheltered stretch near Helsinki to settle, then put your phone away and watch the horizon once you reach open water.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Gulf of Finland rough in November?
Sometimes. Late autumn is part of the stormy season along the Estonian coast, and the highest significant wave height measured off Helsinki, 5.2 m, came in a south-westerly storm on 15 November 2001. Parts of the gulf can also start to freeze from late November. Check the forecast for your own sailing.
Is the Gulf of Finland rough in July?
Usually not. Along the Estonian coast, wave intensity is smallest in late spring and summer, following the lightest winds of the year. For scale, over the open-water months of 2016 to 2019 a coastal buoy off Suomenlinna averaged 0.33 m and the buoy in the centre of the gulf 0.81 m. The buoys are removed before the ice season, so those averages leave out most of the winter.
How rough does the Helsinki to Tallinn ferry get in a storm?
The highest significant wave height measured off Helsinki is 5.2 m, recorded in November 2001 in a south-westerly storm and again in 2012 in an easterly one. The narrow shape of the gulf is not expected to let waves grow much higher. A storm crossing is a very different ride from a summer one.
Does the Gulf of Finland freeze?
Parts of it can freeze from late November to late April. Complete freezing usually occurs by late January, and it may not occur in mild winters.
Is the Gulf of Finland rough in winter?
Often, for part of it. In a typical year, December is rated rough, January rough and February mixed. This is the typical pattern, not a forecast for any sailing.
