Key facts

  • The Bay of Naples is a bay, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: West-facing bay, autumn and winter storms.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March, November and December.
  • The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.
  • It is also known as Golfo di Napoli / Gurfo 'e Napole.

Why does the Bay of Naples get rough?

The Bay of Naples opens to the west into the Mediterranean Sea, with Capri, Ischia and Procida inside it. A buoy off Naples recorded a mean significant wave height of 0.52 m and a maximum of 3.45 m between 2015 and 2018. High waves come mainly from the west, as across the wider Tyrrhenian Sea, and Capri shields the Massa Lubrense coast from the south-west. The big days are storm days: in the storm of 28 December 2020, south-westerly winds topped 20 m/s and waves reached about 4 m.

When is the Bay of Naples roughest?

Autumn and winter are the rough half. Numerous low-pressure systems pass over the basin then, with frequent stormy and windy events, while in spring and summer the Azores anticyclone brings moderate breezes and lower waves. A 2021 paper on the gulf in Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences records low waves of a few tens of centimetres from June to August and waves up to 3 m from November to February. Wave reanalysis data (ERA5) for the sea off the bay ranks January, February and November highest and June, July and August lowest.

What helps on this crossing

  • Choose the vessel as well as the time. The booking site capri.com says hydrofoils are the first services cancelled in rough seas and suggests a ferry rather than a hydrofoil if you suffer from seasickness. On the Ischia run the ferry costs 20 more minutes than the fast craft.
  • Aim for June to August if you can. A 2021 paper on the gulf records low waves in those months, against waves up to 3 m from November to February.
  • On a rough day capri.com does not recommend a catamaran between Naples and Capri. Sit midship, watch the horizon and put your phone away for the crossing.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Bay of Naples rough in December?

Yes, this is storm season. A 2021 paper on the gulf records waves up to 3 m from November to February, and winter storms come with low-pressure systems. In the storm of 28 December 2020, south-westerly winds topped 20 m/s and waves reached about 4 m. The booking site capri.com says hydrofoils are the first services cancelled in rough seas, so check with your operator on the day.

Is the Bay of Naples rough in July?

Usually not. A 2021 paper on the gulf records low waves of a few tens of centimetres from June to August, and in summer the Azores anticyclone brings moderate breezes. The booking site capri.com says it is extremely rare for ferries to be completely suspended between April and the end of October.

Is a ferry or a hydrofoil better for seasickness on the way to Capri?

The booking site capri.com suggests a ferry rather than a hydrofoil if you suffer from seasickness. If you do take a hydrofoil, it advises a single solid hull over a catamaran, and it does not recommend a catamaran between Naples and Capri when seas are particularly rough. Caremar lists its ferry 20 minutes slower than its fast craft on both the Ischia and Procida runs, so you spend longer aboard.

Which Bay of Naples crossing is the shortest?

Sorrento to Capri, at 30 minutes on SNAV's fast ferry. Naples to Procida takes 40 minutes by fast craft and Naples to Capri 50. Naples to Ischia takes about an hour by fast craft, per Caremar.
