Is the Strait of Malacca rough? What to expect on the crossing
Rarely. The Strait of Malacca is sheltered between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, and wave reanalysis data (ERA5) puts the mean daily maximum wave height between 0.3 and 0.6 m in every month. Singapore's weather service lists occasional Sumatra squalls, organised lines of thunderstorms that develop over Sumatra or the strait, in the southwest monsoon season.

Key facts

Why does the Strait of Malacca get rough?
The strait is a narrow stretch of water, 900 km long and 65 to 250 km wide, between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. It is shallow, with a minimum depth of 25 m. Singapore's weather service describes Sumatra squalls as organised lines of thunderstorms that develop over Sumatra or the Strait of Malacca, and lists occasional squalls in Singapore with gusts of 40 to 80 km/h between the predawn hours and midday in the southwest monsoon season, June to September. Malaysia has a southwest monsoon from late May to September and a northeast monsoon from October to March.
When is the Strait of Malacca roughest?
Wave reanalysis data (ERA5) for 2000 to 2024 ranks July and August as the roughest months, with June and September close behind, and February to April as the calmest. That is the southwest monsoon, which Malaysia dates from late May to September, and Singapore's weather service lists occasional squalls with gusts of 40 to 80 km/h in that season. The northeast monsoon, October to March, brings more rain than the southwest monsoon but smaller waves in the data.

- Take the Kuala Perlis ferry if you want the shortest time on the water. Its ticket agent, Cuti Cuti Langkawi, gives about 1 hour 15 minutes, against about 1 hour 45 minutes from Kuala Kedah.
- In June to September, check the forecast before an early sailing. Singapore's weather service says Singapore sees occasional Sumatra squalls in those months, with gusts of 40 to 80 km/h between the predawn hours and midday.
- Keep your eyes on the horizon from a seat with a view of the water. It is the best-supported free fix for motion sickness.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
