Is the South China Sea rough? What to expect on the crossing

Yes in the northeast monsoon, from November to February, and mostly no from April to October. The Tioman ferry operator calls November through February the windy months, and Wikipedia says most of the Perhentian Islands are essentially closed to tourists in that season. Northeast monsoon wind over a deep, open sea

In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the South China Sea is rated rough, one of 34 in that band, with 6 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.

Key facts

  • The South China Sea is a sea, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Northeast monsoon wind over a deep, open sea.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January, February and December.
  • The calmest months are usually April, May, June, July, August, September and October.

Why is the South China Sea so rough?

The South China Sea has an average depth of 1,212 m, and its deepest recorded point is between 5,559 and 5,567 m. Malaysia has a northeast monsoon from October to March and a southwest monsoon from late May to September. Tioman Ferry says wind and weather can be rather severe and changeable from November through February, and that on a particularly windy day the authorities may stop the ferry for the day. ERA5 data shows the same split on the Mersing and Kuala Besut routes: December and January are the roughest months, and May and June the calmest.

When is the South China Sea roughest?

ERA5 data for 2000 to 2024 ranks December and January as the roughest months on the Tioman, Perhentian and open-sea routes, with February close behind. Waves drop sharply by April, and April to October is calm in the data. The Tioman ferry operator names March or April to about September or October as the sunny season, with typically calm seas and easy ferry crossings.

What helps on this crossing

  • Travel between March and October if you can. The Tioman ferry operator describes March or April to about September or October as the sunny season, with typically calm seas and easy ferry crossings.
  • Keep a spare day at both ends of a monsoon trip. Tioman Ferry says sailing times follow the tide and can change with weather or sea state, and the authorities may stop the ferry for a day when it is windy.
  • If you get seasick easily, Tioman Ferry's FAQ says you may be able to fly instead, on Berjaya Air's on-again, off-again service. The same page notes that Berjaya Air has suspended its Singapore to Tioman flight, so check current flights first. On the boat, watch the horizon from a seat with a view.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
