Key facts

  • The Tsugaru Strait is a strait, and passenger reports place it in the high roughness band.
  • The mechanism behind that reputation: Winter monsoon seas into a 20 km gap.
  • Conditions are reported roughest in January and December.
  • The calmest months are usually May, June, July, August and September.
  • It is also known as Tsugaru Kaikyo.

Why is the Tsugaru Strait so rough?

The Tsugaru Strait links the Sea of Japan with the Pacific between Honshu and Hokkaido, and its eastern and western necks are both about 20 km across, with maximum depths of 200 m and 140 m. The Tsugaru Warm Current runs through the strait from west to east and meets the Oyashio on the Pacific side, according to Japanese Wikipedia. Wikipedia says the strong north-western winter monsoon wind blows over the Sea of Japan between October and March. Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry says it checks the weather ahead of a typhoon or low-pressure system and decides before departure whether to sail.

When is the Tsugaru Strait roughest?

ERA5 data for 2000 to 2024 ranks December and January as the roughest months, with February and November next, and June and July as the calmest. March, April and October sit in between, and May and the late summer months are low. Wikipedia says the strong north-western monsoon wind blows over the Sea of Japan between October and March, which matches the rough half of the year in the data.

What helps on this crossing

  • Pick a lower deck and a seat toward the back. Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry says lower decks rock less than upper decks, and the rear rocks less than the front.
  • Take the 90 minute Hakodate to Oma crossing if you want the least time at sea. The operator says it is the shortest link between Honshu and Hokkaido.
  • Check the operator's status on the day. Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry decides before departure whether to sail when a typhoon or low-pressure system is expected, and sudden weather changes can still cancel a sailing.

If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
