Is the Port Phillip rough? What to expect on the crossing
Mostly no. Port Phillip is a sheltered bay, and Searoad says the worst you will feel on its Queenscliff to Sorrento ferry, even in very rough weather, is a slight rolling motion. The rough part is the narrow entrance to Bass Strait, known as the Rip, where strong tidal streams turn turbulent over an uneven seabed.

Sheltered bay, turbulent tide at the Heads
In the Nausea Index table of the 121 sea crossings we cover, the Port Phillip is rated manageable, one of 81 in that band, with 40 rated higher. Full table: the roughest sea crossings, ranked.
Key facts
- The Port Phillip is a bay, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Sheltered bay, turbulent tide at the Heads.
- It is also known as Port Phillip Bay.
Why does the Port Phillip get rough?
Port Phillip is shallow for its size: the deepest part is only 24 m, and half of the bay is shallower than 8 m. It is an enclosed bay that opens to Bass Strait only through a short, narrow channel called the Rip. Searoad describes the bay as sheltered, not open sea. The Rip is the exception, because strong tidal streams there are made turbulent by the uneven seabed, and the flow can reach 8 knots.
When is the Port Phillip roughest?
Neither ferry operator publishes a seasonal sea-state pattern for the bay. Searoad says its ferries are not affected by rough weather. Port Phillip Ferries says it may delay or cancel a service in adverse weather, so the day's forecast matters more than the month.

What helps on this crossing
- Look at the horizon or the far shore. It is the best-supported free fix, and the crossings here are short.
- Port Phillip Ferries vessels have indoor and outdoor seating, and seats are not pre-allocated. Board at least 20 minutes before departure to get a seat with a view.
- Check the Port Phillip Ferries service updates on the day. It says weather can delay or cancel a service, and it posts the latest announcements on its website.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. For what the trials actually say about the oldest trick on that list, see the verdict on looking at the horizon. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Port Phillip rough in July?
July has no rating on this page, because no month-by-month sea-state table for the inside of the bay was found. What the operators say applies in any month. Searoad says its ferries were built for a sheltered bay and that very rough weather brings a slight rolling motion at worst. Port Phillip Ferries may delay or cancel a sailing in adverse weather.
Is Port Phillip rough in January?
January has no rating either, for the same reason. Wikipedia describes the bay's waves as moderate and its summers as warm, with occasional very hot days from northerly winds. Check the forecast and the operator's service updates on the day you travel.
How rough is the Queenscliff to Sorrento ferry?
Searoad says its ferries were purpose built for Port Phillip Bay, which it calls a sheltered bay, not open sea. It says very rough weather brings a slight rolling motion at worst. The crossing takes about 40 minutes.
Is the entrance to Port Phillip rough?
Yes, it is the one rough spot. The Rip, between Point Lonsdale and Point Nepean, has strong tidal streams made turbulent by an uneven seabed, and the flow can reach 8 knots. Searoad says reefs narrow the navigable channel to about 300 metres. Wikipedia says the best time for small craft to enter is at slack water.
