Is the Seto Inland Sea rough? What to expect on the crossing
Rarely. The Seto Inland Sea is a long, narrow sea enclosed by islands and peninsulas, with an average depth of only 38 m. The Naoshima and Miyajima ferries are short, and Shikoku Kisen says its service may be suspended or delayed due to weather or sea conditions.

Key facts
- The Seto Inland Sea is a marginal sea, and passenger reports place it in the moderate roughness band.
- The mechanism behind that reputation: Sheltered inland sea, strong tidal straits.
- Conditions are reported roughest in January, February, March, October, November and December.
- The calmest months are usually April, May, June, July and August.
- It is also known as Seto Naikai.
Why does the Seto Inland Sea get rough?
The Seto Inland Sea is 450 km long and 15 to 55 km wide, and it is partially enclosed by islands, archipelagos and peninsulas. In most places the water is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 38 m and a greatest depth of 105 m. The strong water is in the straits: in the Naruto Strait, strong currents create vortexes up to 20 m across, and the Tokushima Coast Guard warns ships to wait for the tide to change when the current is strong. Typhoons also reach the region, with an average of 2.6 a year reaching the main islands of Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu and Hokkaido since 1951.
When is the Seto Inland Sea roughest?
Modelled wave heights are highest from October to March and lowest from April to August. The values are small, about 0.6 m in January against about 0.2 m in July, so the sea is calm in every month by ocean standards. Ferry Sunflower says it may swap ships on its daytime cruises because of typhoons.

What helps on this crossing
- Take the overnight Osaka to Beppu ferry for the long run. Ferry Sunflower sails overnight between Kansai and Kyushu and offers cabins, so you can lie down for the crossing.
- For Naoshima, the Uno to Miyanoura ferry takes about 20 minutes, against about 50 to 60 minutes from Takamatsu, so leaving from Uno means less time on the water.
- Check the day's service status before you go. Shikoku Kisen publishes it and says weather or sea conditions can suspend or delay service.
- Dizzout, a drug-free sound therapy app for passengers: it works with any headphones once nausea starts, with relief in about 90 seconds.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
