Sphere and motion sickness: what it really does

Sphere in Las Vegas wraps an LED screen of about 160,000 square feet around its audience, and 10,000 of its 17,600 seats are haptic seats that can vibrate and shake during a show. The venue's own FAQ lists seat haptics and movement sensations among its effects. For motion-sensitive visitors the question is scale: one reviewer who gets motion sick called it a challenge at times.

What Sphere actually is

Sphere is a spherical arena east of the Las Vegas Strip that opened in September 2023. Inside, the LED screen wraps around steeply raked seating that climbs across several levels. Sphere Entertainment says 10,000 seats are haptic and can vibrate and shake as each performance requires. Programming mixes concert residencies with Sphere Experience films, currently The Wizard of Oz at Sphere, which announced expanded 4D effects for September 2026.

The operator side. Sphere's FAQ says its events may include seat haptics, movement sensations, flashing lights, loud noises, pyrotechnics and atmospheric effects such as fog, wind, mist and scent. It says these elements may aggravate certain medical or physical conditions, and asks guests to consider any history of discomfort or physical symptoms. It does not name motion sickness. It advises anyone with concerns, or who is pregnant, to consult a physician before attending, and lists two Sensory Rooms, on levels 2 and 6, open during public events subject to availability. For anyone pregnant, this page is informational only: follow the venue's guidance and your own doctor's advice.

What is actually on record

The AU Review's Larry Heath, who deals with motion sickness, reviewed Postcard from Earth at Sphere in 2024 and found it a challenge at times. He pointed to the scale of the screen and the steepness of the venue, and wrote that people prone to motion sickness or sensitive to heights may struggle there. Live for Live Music's Sphere tips give the same caution, and add that the haptic seats produce a rumbling effect, though not every show uses them.

What helps in Sphere

  • Read the event page before you buy: Sphere's FAQ points there for each event's details.
  • Book an aisle seat, so a break is easy. Sphere's exits are final: once you leave the building you cannot come back in.
  • If a sequence starts to swim, look down or close your eyes for a minute, which takes the moving image out of your view.
  • Know where the Sensory Rooms are: Sphere lists one on level 2 and one on level 6, open during public events subject to availability.
  • If you leave queasy, a still horizon and slow breathing settle it; a drug-free sound-therapy app like Dizzout is designed to help once symptoms have started.

The mechanism common to every format, and the seat advice that follows from it, is on the shaky cam and 3D movies guide.

Does the Sphere make you motion sick?

It can for some visitors: Sphere's FAQ does not name motion sickness, but it lists seat haptics and movement sensations among its effects and says they may aggravate some conditions. The AU Review's reviewer, who gets motion sick, found Postcard from Earth a challenge at times and pointed to the screen's scale and the steep seating.

Where should I sit at the Sphere if I get motion sick?

Sphere publishes no seat advice for motion sickness. Live for Live Music's tips suggest sitting farther back and stepping out to the atrium for a break. An aisle seat makes that break easy, and Sphere lists two Sensory Rooms, on levels 2 and 6, open during public events subject to availability.

Do the seats at the Sphere move?

Sphere Entertainment says 10,000 seats are haptic and can vibrate and shake as each performance requires, and the venue's FAQ lists seat haptics and movement sensations among its effects.
