Cosm and motion sickness: what it really does

Cosm shows live sports and films inside an LED dome 87 feet across that surrounds the audience, with no headset. Its own help center says content with fast motion on its large displays may cause dizziness or symptoms associated with motion sickness, and it says what to do: close your eyes or look down for a couple of minutes, or move to the Hall or the Deck.

What Cosm actually is

Cosm calls its format Shared Reality: a domed, compound curved LED display around a seated audience. Each venue has three spaces. The Dome is 87 feet across, with an LED display of 12K horizontal and 10K vertical resolution. The Hall, just outside it, is a two-story space with tables and booths. The Deck is an outdoor terrace on the top floor. Cosm lists venues open in Los Angeles (Hollywood Park, Inglewood), Dallas (Grandscape, The Colony) and Atlanta (Centennial Yards), with Detroit and Cleveland announced.

The operator side. Cosm's help center says that, because of the immersive nature of its large displays, content with fast motion or sensory elements may cause dizziness or symptoms associated with motion sickness. It recommends closing your eyes or looking down for a couple of minutes, offers retreat areas for guests who feel overstimulated, and asks guests to contact staff for help finding a more comfortable area. It advises guests with sensitivities to review event warnings and talk to a Fan Ambassador beforehand. Non-immersive content plays in the Hall, and the Deck offers outdoor space for fresh air. Cosm also posts warnings per title: its notice for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in Shared Reality names immersive camera movements and motion sickness.

What is actually on record

Pollstar's 2024 report from a college football showing at Cosm Los Angeles noted that one sideline camera boom shook at times, and guests groaned at the disorienting effect. It called the glitch brief and said camera angles otherwise shifted smoothly. That fits the operator's framing, which ties the risk to content with fast motion rather than to the room.

What helps in Cosm

  • Use Cosm's own advice first: close your eyes or look down for a couple of minutes when the motion builds.
  • Ask staff for a more comfortable area. Cosm says it offers retreat areas for guests who feel overstimulated.
  • Step out to the Hall, where content is not immersive, or to the Deck for fresh air.
  • Check the event's warning before you book, and talk to a Fan Ambassador if you are unsure; Cosm posts notices per title.
  • If you leave queasy, a still horizon and slow breathing settle it; a drug-free sound-therapy app like Dizzout is designed to help once symptoms have started.

The mechanism common to every format, and the seat advice that follows from it, is on the shaky cam and 3D movies guide.
