Do electrical nausea wristbands work?

Verdict: Mixed

Split, and the split runs along an interesting line: electrical acustimulation beat sham stimulation in a gastroenterology study of vection-induced sickness, then failed to prevent motion sickness in a later trial built around the consumer device.

What it's claimed to do

Unlike a plastic stud, these deliver an actual electrical pulse to the median nerve at the wrist. They cost substantially more than acupressure bands, and some are cleared as medical devices.

Levels describe the state of the published research on motion sickness specifically β€” not on nausea in general, and not how well something worked for any individual. β€œUntested” means no trial has looked; it is not the same as a remedy having been tested and failed.

What the research actually says

Hu, Stern and Koch tested electrical acustimulation in two experiments and found it reduced symptom severity against both sham stimulation and no treatment, alongside reduced gastric tachyarrhythmia β€” the disordered stomach rhythm that tracks nausea. That is a more mechanistically satisfying result than the acupressure work, because it shows a physiological change and not only a change in how people rated their symptoms. Set against that, Miller and Muth's 2004 trial included a ReliefBand arm and found that neither band prevented motion sickness in the optokinetic drum, trained or untrained. So the picture is: a positive result on relieving sickness that is already underway, and a negative result on preventing it in the first place. That distinction may be real β€” the 1992 study was about relief, the 2004 study about prevention β€” but nobody has run the trial that would settle it. Given the price difference between these and a plastic band, the gap in the evidence matters more here than it does elsewhere on this page.

Electrical acustimulation reduced symptom scores and irregular gastric activity versus no stimulation, and the acustimulation group had lower symptom severity than both sham-stimulation and control groups. Authors concluded it reduces motion sickness symptom severity and appears to decrease gastric tachyarrhythmia.
