Warframe Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps
Warframe moves faster than almost anything else on a flat screen, and it also ships one of the most complete comfort menus in the genre. The Accessibility tab holds Enable Screen Shake, Enable HUD Motion, Visual Effects Intensity and a Recoil Type setting with three options, and the Display tab holds Field of View, Motion Blur, Depth of Field and Distortions. The detail that matters: the game's own description of Enable Screen Shake says it does not affect shake caused by recoil, which is what Recoil Type is for. Setting one without the other is the mistake that leaves players thinking the menu did nothing. Checked September 2026.

Why Warframe can trigger motion sickness
Bullet jumping is the reason. Warframe's movement is not running, it is a chain of launches, slides and mid-air redirections, and the camera follows all of it at a speed that no vehicle in real life produces. Your eyes get continuous, fast, unpredictable motion while your body sits still, which is the mismatch in its purest form. Then the game layers effects on top: ability visuals from three squadmates filling the screen, distortion effects, and weapon recoil that moves the camera every time you fire. That last one is worth separating out, because it is handled by its own setting. Screen shake and recoil shake are two different systems in this game, and turning the first off leaves the second running. Warframe's own wording says so, which is unusually honest and unusually easy to miss.
- Bullet jumping, which sends the camera through fast arcs no real movement produces
- Recoil that moves the camera with every shot, handled separately from screen shake
- Ability effects from four players at once, filling the screen with motion and light
- Distortion effects, which warp the frame rather than just moving it
- Long missions in enclosed tilesets, where there is no horizon to steady your eyes
Comfort settings in Warframe
Warframe ships a full set of comfort settings.
| Setting | Where | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Enable Screen Shake | Options, Accessibility | Off. The game's own description states this does not affect screen shake caused by recoil, so change Recoil Type as well or you will think it did nothing |
| Recoil Type | Options, Accessibility | Reticle or Reduced. Camera moves the view with every shot. Reticle keeps the camera still and shows recoil as a small diamond inside the reticle instead. Reduced keeps the camera still and shows nothing |
| Enable HUD Motion | Options, Accessibility | Off. It lets the interface drift with your Warframe's movement, and an interface that slides while you jump adds motion at the one part of the screen your eyes use as an anchor |
| Visual Effects Intensity | Options, Accessibility | Lower it. You can click the number and set it to 0 to disable effects entirely, which is a large change in a four-player squad |
| Reduce Teammate Visual Effects | Options, Accessibility | On. It minimises the effects from other players' abilities and weapons, which is most of the motion you did not create |
| Field of View | Options, Display | Raise it. The game describes it as vertical degrees of view, so the number reads lower than horizontal figures elsewhere. Widen in steps |
| Motion Blur, Depth of Field, Distortions | Options, Display | All off. Blur smears fast movement, depth of field pulls your focus, and distortions warp the frame. In a game this fast, all three cost you more than they give |

What helps beyond the settings
- Change Enable Screen Shake and Recoil Type together, because one without the other is the common mistake
- Run shorter missions while you tune, since a long endless run is the worst place to test a setting
- Play solo or in a duo for a session, because most of the screen motion in a full squad is not yours
- A drug-free sound-therapy app like Dizzout is designed to help once symptoms have started, through any headphones
The fixes people reach for once they step away from the screen are covered separately, with the trials attached: the remedy verdicts.
Frequently asked questions
How do you turn off screen shake in Warframe?+
Options, Accessibility, and switch Enable Screen Shake off. The setting's own description notes it does not affect screen shake caused by recoil. That part is handled by Recoil Type on the same screen, so set both. Recoil Type has three options: Camera moves the view, Reticle keeps it still and shows a small diamond, and Reduced keeps it still and shows nothing.
What is the best Recoil Type in Warframe for motion sickness?+
Reticle or Reduced. Both stop the camera moving when you fire. Reticle still shows you where the shots are going with a small diamond inside the reticle, which keeps the information without the camera movement. Reduced removes the indicator too. Camera is the default behaviour and the one that bounces the view.
Why does bullet jumping make me feel sick?+
Because it produces camera motion with no real-world equivalent. Your eyes see a fast launch, a mid-air turn and a slide, all in under two seconds, while your inner ear reports that you have not moved at all. That gap is what motion sickness is. Warframe cannot remove it without changing the game, which is why the menu concentrates on shake, effects and blur instead.
