Active Matter Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps
Active Matter is a first-person extraction shooter. The developers say players reported dizziness, headaches and motion sickness, and they answered with settings. You can now reduce camera bobbing, camera sway from walking and from breathing, and camera sway when turning. They also toned down the portal ripple, extraction wobble and post-explosion double vision.

Why Active Matter can trigger motion sickness
The developers' own update notes name the sources: camera bobbing while moving, sway while walking, sway from the character's breathing, and a set of effects near extraction portals and Active Matter clusters. Each now has a setting or has been reduced. Field of view and film grain also have options. The developers tuned this over several updates in September and October, so the menu may change again.
- Camera bobbing and sway while you walk, breathe and turn
- The distortion ripple beneath extraction portals and around Active Matter clusters, which the developers removed
- Screen wobble during extraction and double vision after explosions, which the developers toned down

Comfort settings in Active Matter
Active Matter ships a full set of comfort settings.
| Setting | Where | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce camera bobbing | In-game settings | Turn it on. The developers describe it as reducing camera bobbing while moving, and another note calls it reducing walking camera sway |
| Reduce camera sway from breathing | In-game settings | Turn it on to reduce the camera sway from the character's breathing |
| Reduce camera sway | In-game settings | Turn it on. It makes changes in view direction smoother when turning |
| Field of view | In-game settings | Raise it a few degrees at a time. Two aiming options, Constant ADS zoom and Aiming speed independent of FOV, keep aiming the same at any field of view |
| Film grain | In-game settings | Turn it off if the noise bothers you. The developers lowered its default intensity to lessen distracting noise in dark areas |
One guide explains these settings for every game: how field of view, motion blur, head bob and camera shake trigger motion sickness.
