Is the Portsmouth to Caen crossing rough?
Sometimes, and for longer than the short routes. Portsmouth to Caen is Brittany Ferries' busiest western Channel link at about 6 hours by day, crossing the wide central Channel rather than the Dover strait. Most sailings are comfortable, but when a south-westerly is running there is no hiding for the middle four hours.

Why the Portsmouth to Caen crossing gets rough
The central Channel is open to weather arriving from the Atlantic in a way the Dover strait never is. Wind waves have far more distance to build, and after a blow the route keeps rolling in leftover swell for a day or so. The crossing leaves the Solent's shelter quickly, spends the majority of its time in open water, then gains protection again only in the final approach along the Normandy coast into the Ouistreham canal.

Settled and often flat from late May to August. From October the Atlantic depression season reaches the Channel and rough crossings cluster between November and February. Overnight sailings in winter are the ones where a cabin midship earns its money.

What helps on this crossing
- On day sailings, eat before boarding and go light on the on-board restaurant if the forecast is fresh.
- A cabin is worth it even by day in rough weather: lying flat midship is the most stable place on the ship.
- Spend the middle hours where you can see the horizon; the forward lounges look impressive but move the most.
- If your dates are flexible, a June crossing and a November crossing are different experiences on this route.
- Watch the wind direction: a northerly blow gives Caen sailings a lee for the last hour; a south-westerly does not.
- Dizzout, a drug-free sound therapy app for passengers: it works with any headphones once nausea starts, with relief in about 90 seconds.
Buying a tablet in the UK before you sail? UK pharmacies sell Kwells, Stugeron and Avomine for travel sickness, and their labels differ on when to take them. Kwells vs Stugeron and Stugeron vs Avomine set out the label facts side by side. Which one suits you is a question for the pharmacist.
For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. Choosing between a fast catamaran and a conventional ship elsewhere too? The physics is the same everywhere: see the catamaran guide. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.
Frequently asked questions
How rough is the Portsmouth to Caen ferry in winter?
Rough enough to notice, rarely rough enough to regret. Winter depressions bring beam swell and the ship rolls steadily through the open middle of the crossing; crockery-level drama is uncommon but queasy passengers are not. Operators keep sailing through most winter weather and slow down rather than cancel.
Is the overnight or daytime Caen crossing better for seasickness?
Overnight, for most people. You cross the roughest water horizontal in a cabin, which is the position the inner ear tolerates best, and you sleep through the hours you would otherwise spend watching the sea. Choose a midship cabin on a lower deck rather than a high outside one.
How does Caen compare with the other Portsmouth crossings?
It is the middle option. Shorter and less exposed than Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbao, which cross the open Bay of Biscay, and longer than the sheltered Dover strait hops. Against Portsmouth to St Malo it is about 5 hours quicker but misses the more protected final approach St Malo enjoys.
Should I sort out seasickness medicine before boarding?
Speak to a pharmacist or your doctor about whether medicine suits you; that is their call, not ours. If you do use something, note that motion sickness medicines are generally labelled to be taken before departure, which on this route means at Portsmouth, several hours before the open water.
