Is the Yufuin no Mori rough?

The Yufuin no Mori is JR Kyushu's green resort express, a dedicated sightseeing train that winds inland along the Kyudai Main Line to the onsen towns of Yufuin and Beppu. It is a sightseeing train, not a tilting express: the pace is slower than the coastal Sonic, and the raised floor and big windows exist to keep the forest and valleys in view, which is exactly what a motion-sensitive rider wants.

Why the Yufuin no Mori moves you the way it does

The Kyudai line follows river valleys through the middle of Kyushu, so the route curves steadily but gently, and the dedicated KiHa 71 and 72 trainsets run it at sightseeing pace. The raised seating position gives an unusually good forward and side view for a Japanese express, keeping the visual world and the felt motion matched. Riders who struggle on the hard-tilting Sonic along the coast generally report the inland Yufuin routing as the easier journey, with around two hours of exposure to Yufuin.

What helps on board

  • Most riders are fine here: the pace is sightseeing-slow and the curves gentle. If you are very susceptible, keep the river valley in frame through the middle section.
  • The raised floor improves the view; use it, because the window is better medicine than the bento through the winding stretch.
  • Expect full, warm carriages in foliage season; a vent or a cooler spot helps more on crowded days.
  • If a wave builds mid-ride, you do not have to white-knuckle it: sound therapy through any headphones is a drug-free option with relief in about 90 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Yufuin no Mori a tilting train?

+

No, it is a dedicated sightseeing train, not a tilting express. It winds along the Kyudai valley line at a relaxed pace with raised seating and large windows built for the view, which most motion-sensitive riders find far easier than the tilting coastal Sonic.

Hakata to Beppu: Yufuin no Mori or Sonic for a sensitive rider?

+

The Yufuin routing is slower and gentler: valley curves at sightseeing pace with the view designed in. The Sonic is faster and tilts through coastal curves. If motion sickness is the deciding factor, the forest train is the calmer choice.

Which section winds the most?

+

The middle of the Kyudai line, where the route climbs along the river valleys toward Yufuin, curves the most. It is also the prettiest stretch, and the big windows make watching it the natural anti-nausea strategy.
