Is the TranzAlpine rough?

The TranzAlpine's 223 km cross two different motion problems. First the Waimakariri gorge, where the line winds over viaducts including the 73 m Staircase and the curves come continuously. Then, past Arthur's Pass, the 8.5 km Otira tunnel: around a quarter of an hour underground with no horizon at all, which is where riders who were coping quietly often notice they were coping.

Why the TranzAlpine moves you the way it does

The gorge section is classic mountain railway, curve after curve with the river far below, taken at modest speed with big windows and an open-air car available. It is the Otira tunnel that changes the input mix: a long, gently graded descent (or climb, westbound the tunnel descends toward Otira) in darkness removes every visual anchor while the motion continues. The research on visual reference is clear that a missing horizon makes the same motion harder to tolerate. Emerging into West Coast rain forest light resets most people within minutes.

What helps on board

  • Use the open-air viewing carriage through the gorge section: full peripheral vision and cool air at once, the best combination on this list.
  • The Otira tunnel is long and viewless; sit still, rest your eyes inside the carriage, and let it pass.
  • Eat light, and keep a layer handy: the open car runs cold and the enclosed cars warm, and the cool side is the friend.
  • Board with relief ready. If nausea starts mid-journey, sound therapy through any headphones is a drug-free option with relief in about 90 seconds.

Where to sit is its own question, answered properly in where to sit on a train for motion sickness. And for why trains set people off at all, from sway to reading to tilting stock, see the train motion sickness guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TranzAlpine rough?

+

No, it is a steady scenic run, but the Waimakariri gorge winds continuously and the 8.5 km Otira tunnel removes the horizon for around a quarter of an hour. Sensitive riders do best with eyes on the mountains in the gorge and a fixed point inside the carriage through the tunnel.

What should I do in the Otira tunnel?

+

Pick something stable inside the carriage to rest your eyes on, breathe slowly, and skip reading until daylight returns. The motion in the tunnel is mild; it is the missing horizon that makes it feel different, and it ends after about 15 minutes.

Is the open-air carriage worth using?

+

Yes, in the gorge especially: full horizon, cold clean air and the sound of the river far below. It is the strongest reset available on the train, and stepping out for ten minutes often settles a borderline stomach for the rest of the leg.
