Is the Cinque Terre line rough?
The Cinque Terre trains are a low motion risk with one odd property: there is almost nothing to see. Of the line's 44 km, more than 28 run inside 51 tunnels, and the hops between villages take about 3 minutes, most of them underground. Motion sickness needs exposure time, and these journeys are too short to build any; what visitors actually notice is the strobing alternation of tunnel dark and sea light.

Why the Cinque Terre line moves you the way it does
The line hugs a cliff coast too steep for open railway, so it burrows. A typical hop accelerates in a tunnel, glimpses a village, and brakes in the next tunnel: there is no horizon to lose because you barely had one. For sensitive travellers the practical risks are secondary ones: packed summer carriages get hot and airless, and standing wedged in a crowd removes your ability to see anything stable. Even so, three-minute exposures end before most stomachs can object.

What helps on board
- Board early enough to stand near a door with airflow if the carriage is packed; heat and crowding are this line's real triggers.
- For queasy travellers the hops are mercifully short; if you are marginal, break the journey at the next village rather than pushing through several hops.
- Ride the quieter early or late trains in summer.
- Have relief ready anyway. If nausea starts, sound therapy through any headphones is one drug-free option, with relief in about 90 seconds.
Where to sit is its own question, answered properly in where to sit on a train for motion sickness. And for why trains set people off at all, from sway to reading to tilting stock, see the train motion sickness guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do the Cinque Terre trains cause motion sickness?
+
Rarely. The hops are about 3 minutes each and mostly inside tunnels, far too short for motion sickness to build. The discomfort visitors report is nearly always summer heat and crowding rather than motion.
Is the tunnel darkness a problem?
+
It is disorienting for a moment when the train accelerates in the dark, but each tunnel spell is brief and the stops come fast. Travellers who struggle underground on metros generally cope fine here because every exposure is so short.
Boat or train between the villages for a sensitive traveller?
+
The train, easily. The ferries ride open Ligurian swell and concentrate every classic seasickness trigger; the train's worst case is three warm minutes in a tunnel.
