Is the Albula line rough?

The Albula line is the strongest no-horizon story in rail. Above Bergun the track gains height by climbing in circles inside the mountain: spiral tunnels where the train turns continuously in darkness, stacked one above another, before bursting out to cross the 65 m Landwasser viaduct straight into a cliff face tunnel. Your inner ear gets prolonged turning with zero visual confirmation, the exact mismatch that defines motion sickness.

Why the Albula line moves you the way it does

Between Bergun and Preda the line lifts over 400 m in a few km of valley, and the builders solved it with helicoidal tunnels: the train enters the rock, corkscrews, and emerges higher up facing the way it came. In the dark your inner ear registers a long continuous turn while your eyes see a static carriage, which is as pure as the sensory conflict gets on rails. Each spiral lasts under two minutes and the sequence is over in about a quarter of an hour, which is why most riders file it under thrilling rather than sickening. Sensitive ones should know it is coming.

What helps on board

  • Inside the spiral tunnels your body turns while your eyes get nothing; expect the brief oddness, and fix on the carriage interior until the valley reappears, higher and reversed.
  • Between Bergun and Preda, watch the valley floor reappear at different heights: tracking the geometry makes the corkscrew legible instead of disorienting.
  • Two hours, big scenery, gentle speeds: light preparation is enough, but keep the screens for St. Moritz.
  • Have a rescue in your pocket: a sound therapy session through any headphones is drug-free, with relief in about 90 seconds.

Where to sit is its own question, answered properly in where to sit on a train for motion sickness. And for why trains set people off at all, from sway to reading to tilting stock, see the train motion sickness guide.

Frequently asked questions

What do the Albula spirals feel like?

+

A long, steady turn in darkness, repeated several times as the line corkscrews up inside the mountain. Your inner ear feels the turning and your eyes get nothing to confirm it, which briefly disorients almost everyone. Each spiral lasts under two minutes.

Is the Albula line worse than the Bernina for motion sickness?

+

They test different things. The Albula concentrates turning into dark spiral tunnels; the Bernina turns in the open, where your eyes can follow it. Riders who cope by watching the horizon find the Albula's dark spirals the harder few minutes; the Bernina's open spirals bother them less.

Which trains run the Albula line?

+

Regular Rhaetian Railway trains between Chur and St. Moritz, plus the Glacier Express and tourist stock with panoramic cars. The spiral section between Bergun and Preda is the same for all of them.
