SCUM Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps
SCUM is a multiplayer survival game played in first or third person, depending on the server. Gamepires added a head bobbing slider in 2020 that can turn the effect down or off, a Horizontal Field of View slider in the video options and an option to turn off depth of field. Checked October 2026.

Why SCUM can trigger motion sickness
Gamepires reworked the head bob in 2020 to give first-person running more weight, and added weapon sway in first person for rifles. On a first-person only server you cannot switch to third person to take a break. The head bobbing slider and the field of view slider are the main fixes. The sources opened do not confirm a motion blur off switch.
- Head bobbing while running, which Gamepires reworked in 2020 to add weight
- Weapon sway in first person when not aiming, added for all rifles
- First-person only servers, where third person is not available

Comfort settings in SCUM
SCUM ships some comfort settings, but not a full set.

|---|---|---|
| Head bobbing | Options | Turn the slider down, or off. Gamepires added it in the LOCK'N'LOAD update and later notes confirm it can be disabled |
| Horizontal Field of View | Options > Video | Widen it a step at a time if the view feels closed in, and test each change |
| Depth of field | Options | Turn it off for a sharper picture |
| Server perspective | In-game settings | Join a server that allows third person if first person bothers you. Servers can be first-person only, third-person only, or allow both |

The fixes people reach for once they step away from the screen are covered separately, with the trials attached: the remedy verdicts.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn off head bob in SCUM?
Use the head bobbing slider in the options. Gamepires added it in the LOCK'N'LOAD update in July 2020 so players could increase or decrease the effect, and later patch notes refer to head bobbing being disabled in settings. The notes do not say which options tab it sits in.
How do I change the FOV in SCUM?
Gamepires added a Horizontal Field of View slider in the video options in December 2018. The patch notes do not give the range or the default.
Can you play SCUM in third person?
It depends on the server. Since October 2019 server owners can choose first-person only, third-person only, or both. Gamepires announced in October 2026 that it is retiring its official Hardcore servers, including the Third Person variants.
Is SCUM on PS5 or Xbox?
Not as of September 2025, when Gamepires said consoles were high on its wishlist and that it was focused on the PC version.
