Dead by Daylight Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps

If Dead by Daylight makes you sick as killer and fine as survivor, that is the camera, not you. Killers play in first person at a field of view that was locked at 87 for years, and survivors play in third person. Players who wanted a wider killer view had to spend a perk slot on Shadowborn to get it. Patch 7.5.0 changed that on 30 January 2024 by adding a field of view slider, 87 up to 103, and the studio put it in the Beta tab of the settings menu with a stated plan to move it to Accessibility once it left beta. Check both tabs, because your version may have moved it.

Why Dead by Daylight can trigger motion sickness

A field of view of 87 is narrow for a first-person game, and narrow views do two things at once. Less of the world fits on screen, so the same turn sweeps a larger share of what you can see, and the world appears to rush past faster than it is moving. Killers turn constantly: around pallets, around loops, around a survivor who is deliberately making you turn. That is the game. Survivors get the third-person camera, which sits back from the character and gives your eyes a stable body to anchor to, which is why the same match can be comfortable from one side and rough from the other. The wider slider does not change the loops, but it widens the window they happen in, and for a lot of players that is the whole difference.

  • A killer field of view that starts at 87, narrow for a first-person game
  • Constant tight turning around loops and pallets, the core of killer play
  • Chases that hold the same fast camera motion for a minute at a time
  • Match after match with no break, since a trial ends and the next queues immediately
  • Killers with their own camera quirks, where a low or unusual viewpoint changes the feel again

Comfort settings in Dead by Daylight

Dead by Daylight ships some comfort settings, but not a full set.

SettingWhereRecommendation
Field of view sliderSettings, Beta tabRaise it toward 103. It shipped in the Beta tab in patch 7.5.0 and the plan announced at the time was to move it to Accessibility once it leaves beta, so look in both tabs
Default field of view87This is where killers sit if you never touch the slider, and it is the value most reports of nausea were describing
ShadowbornA perk, not a settingNo longer the only route to a wider view. Before the slider, comfort cost you a perk slot, which is why the change mattered to people who needed it
Survivor cameraNot adjustableSurvivors play in third person and the slider does not apply to them. If killer is what makes you queasy and survivor never does, the camera is the difference
The Good GuyExcluded from the sliderThis killer's camera is deliberately low and the slider does not apply. If that one is the problem, the setting will not reach it

What helps beyond the settings

  • Move the slider once, then play three trials before deciding, since the wider view takes a match or two to read normally
  • Alternate killer and survivor rather than queuing killer all evening
  • Stop after a rough chase instead of queuing again, because symptoms carry into the next trial
  • A drug-free sound-therapy app like Dizzout is designed to help once symptoms have started, and your headphones are already on

The fixes people reach for once they step away from the screen are covered separately, with the trials attached: the remedy verdicts.

Frequently asked questions

How do you change FOV in Dead by Daylight?+

Open the settings menu and look for the field of view slider. It arrived in patch 7.5.0 on 30 January 2024 in the Beta tab, and the plan stated at the time was to move it to the Accessibility section once it left beta, so check both. The range is 87 to 103, and 87 is the default that killers had before the slider existed.

Why does playing killer make me motion sick but survivor does not?+

Killers play in first person, survivors play in third. A third-person camera keeps a stable character in frame for your eyes to anchor to, and it sits back from the action. First person at a narrow field of view puts you inside every tight turn around a loop. The field of view slider narrows that gap, though it does not close it.

Do I still need Shadowborn for motion sickness?+

No. Before patch 7.5.0 the perk was the only way to widen the killer view, which meant paying a perk slot for comfort. The slider replaced that. Some players still run the perk for other reasons, but you no longer have to choose between a build you want and a view you can play in.
