Deep Rock Galactic Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps
Deep Rock Galactic gives you more comfort controls than most first-person games, and then puts a floor under the one that matters most. Options, Gameplay holds a field of view slider that reaches 120, a View Bobbing slider that reaches 0 percent, and a Camera Shake slider that stops at 25 percent. That last number is the whole story of this page. You can quieten the shake, you cannot switch it off in the menu, and in a game about drilling through rock in the dark, shake is constant. There is an ini file route to zero and a community mod that does the same, both covered below. Checked September 2026.

Why Deep Rock Galactic can trigger motion sickness
Caves are the problem. Every mission is an enclosed space with no horizon, no sky, and no fixed reference point, which removes the thing your eyes normally use to work out which way is up. On top of that the game keeps moving the camera for you: drilling shakes it, the Drill Dozer shakes it, explosions shake it, and ziplines and grapples carry you along paths you did not walk. Then there is the part people underestimate, which is that you can be upside down. Terrain is fully destructible in three dimensions, so your view can end up at any angle, and a tilting horizon is the strongest single cue your inner ear reads. Turn the bob down, drop the shake as far as the menu allows, and widen the view, and it becomes a manageable game. The residual 25 percent shake is why some players go further.
- Camera Shake, which the menu floors at 25 percent rather than off
- Caves with no horizon, so your eyes have no fixed reference for which way is up
- Ziplines, grapples and the drill, which move you along paths your body did not walk
- View Bobbing, on by default, swaying the camera as you walk and mine
- Missions running twenty minutes or more with no natural pause underground
Comfort settings in Deep Rock Galactic
Deep Rock Galactic ships some comfort settings, but not a full set.
The Camera Shake slider bottoms out at 25 percent. In a game built on drilling, explosions and collapsing rock, that residual is not small, and it is the reason players who set everything else correctly still report trouble. The config file and the community mod both reach zero, but neither is an in-game setting, so read the menu as taking you most of the way and no further.
| Setting | Where | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Shake | Options, Gameplay | 25 percent, the lowest the menu allows. This is the setting that matters most and the one the game will not let you switch off |
| View Bobbing | Options, Gameplay | 0 percent. Players report a small residual sway even at zero, but the drop from the default is large |
| Field of View | Options, Gameplay | Toward 120, the maximum. Wider helps in caves, where a tight view makes narrow tunnels feel faster than you are moving. Too wide has its own uneasy feel, so move it in steps |
| CameraShakeScale in GameUserSettings.ini | PC config file, outside the game | 0 if 25 percent is still too much. Players report this reaches what the menu will not. It is a file edit, so back the file up first, and it may reset after a patch |
| Camera Shake Control mod | mod.io, PC | The community answer to the same floor. Mods can affect what counts as a modded save, so check the game's current mod rules before installing |

What helps beyond the settings
- Set all three Gameplay sliders in one visit, then run a single mission before judging
- Pick shorter mission types while you work out what your limit is
- Look at the terrain rather than the ceiling when you feel disoriented, since a floor gives your eyes something to hold
- A drug-free sound-therapy app like Dizzout is designed to help once symptoms have started, through the headphones you already have on for callouts
The fixes people reach for once they step away from the screen are covered separately, with the trials attached: the remedy verdicts.
Frequently asked questions
How do you turn off camera shake in Deep Rock Galactic?+
You cannot turn it off in the menu. Options, Gameplay has a Camera Shake slider, and the lowest value it accepts is 25 percent. Players who need zero edit CameraShakeScale in GameUserSettings.ini on PC or use a community mod that does the same thing. Both sit outside the game, so back up the file and check the current mod rules first.
What are the best Deep Rock Galactic settings for motion sickness?+
Three sliders, all in Options, Gameplay. Camera Shake to its 25 percent minimum, View Bobbing to 0 percent, and Field of View up toward 120. Widen the field of view in steps rather than jumping to the maximum, because a view that is too wide creates its own uneasy feeling in tight caves.
Why do the caves in Deep Rock Galactic make me dizzy?+
There is no horizon underground. Your eyes normally use a stable line to work out which way is up, and a cave gives them nothing, while the terrain is destructible in every direction so your view can end up at any angle. Add shake from drilling and explosions and it becomes a hard environment even with the sliders set well.
