Wiped out after a flight: sopite syndrome or jet lag?
A two hour flight can flatten you for the rest of the day, and jet lag gets the blame even when the trip crossed no time zones at all. Motion produces its own kind of tiredness, called sopite syndrome, and a plane is good at producing it. The two feel similar and behave nothing alike.

Why this happens on a plane
Jet lag is a clock problem. It only happens when you cross time zones, it bites hardest a day or two later, and it looks like being wide awake at 3am and useless at 3pm. Sopite tiredness is a motion problem. It starts in the air, often within the first hour, and brings yawning, apathy and a flat foggy feeling rather than sleepiness at the wrong hour. It clears within a few hours of landing. A domestic hop that wipes you out is not jet lag.
What to do right now
- 1
Open the shade and look outside for a few minutes. A real view of movement takes the edge off the fog.
- 2
Drink water. Dry cabin air plus hours without a glass makes everything worse.
- 3
Get up and walk the aisle when the belt sign is off.
- 4
Keep the vent on you and the cabin cool rather than cocooned in a blanket.
- 5
Try a Dizzout session through any headphones during a bumpy stretch. It is drug free, so unlike travel tablets it does not add drowsiness of its own.

Preventing it next time
- Book over the wings and take a window seat when the flight is likely to be rough.
- Skip alcohol in the air and go easy on coffee, which costs you more later than it gives you now.
- Eat before boarding rather than arriving hungry.
- Keep the first hours after landing light if flying reliably flattens you, and get outside into daylight when you arrive.
When to see a doctor
Travel tiredness that clears within a day is not a medical problem. See a doctor about exhaustion lasting more than a few days after a flight, or drowsiness that arrives with dizziness or hearing changes after descent. Tiredness with breathlessness, chest pain, or a swollen painful calf after a long flight needs urgent assessment rather than a nap.
Common questions
Can you get jet lag on a short flight?
Not really. Jet lag comes from your body clock being out of step with local time, so it needs a change of time zones. A short domestic flight that leaves you flat is doing something else: motion tiredness, dehydration, cabin noise and a broken night before an early departure.
Why do I fall asleep the moment the plane takes off?
Continuous motion, a warm cabin, low light and nothing to do is a strong sedative package, and the balance system's response to motion adds to it. It is a common and harmless version of the same reaction that gives other people nausea.
Does sleeping on the plane help?
Sleeping through turbulence usually does help, because you are not fighting a mismatch you cannot see. What does not help is landing and going straight to bed at the wrong local hour after crossing time zones. Daylight and a normal bedtime do more for that than a nap.
