Is the Copenhagen to Oslo crossing rough?

Mostly no, with one open stretch. Copenhagen to Oslo is a 17.5 hour overnight cruise-ferry run with Go Nordic Cruiseline, and most of it is sheltered: the Oresund and Kattegat going north, the long Oslofjord at the end. The open Skagerrak is crossed during the night, and that is the only leg where a westerly gale gets a real swing at the ship.

Kattegat, Skagerrak and Oslofjord ยท about 17 hours 30 minutes, overnight ยท Reputation among passengers: mixed: commonly reported as uncomfortable in the wrong conditions.

Why the Copenhagen to Oslo crossing gets rough

Geography does most of the protecting. The route hugs relatively sheltered water between the Danish islands and the Swedish coast, and the Oslofjord is effectively an inland waterway. The exception is the corner where the route rounds the Skagen area and crosses the open Skagerrak, where North Sea swell funnels in; in a westerly blow that few hours, usually in the small hours of the morning, is where the rolling happens. The ships are large cruise ferries with the mass to soften it.

This route crosses the Skagerrak. For the full picture of that water, every crossing on it and what drives its reputation, see is the Skagerrak rough?

When it's worst, month by month

Comfortable most of the year; the October to February gale season occasionally delivers a rolly night section over the Skagerrak. Summer sailings are commonly flat end to end.

What helps on this crossing

  • Choose a cabin midship and low; the price difference is small and the sleep difference is not.
  • Enjoy dinner early; the open-water leg comes later in the night.
  • If you wake to rolling, stay horizontal; the exposed corner passes in a few hours.
  • The Oslofjord arrival is long, scenic and flat; save the deck time for the morning.
  • Dizzout, a drug-free sound therapy app for passengers: it works with any headphones once nausea starts, with relief in about 90 seconds.

For the full toolkit see the seasickness guide, or what to do once it has already started. Choosing between a fast catamaran and a conventional ship elsewhere too? The physics is the same everywhere: see the catamaran guide. If the rocking follows you ashore afterwards, that is land sickness, which is normal, and it passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Copenhagen to Oslo ferry rough?

Mostly not: the majority of the 17.5 hour route runs in the sheltered Oresund, Kattegat and Oslofjord. The open Skagerrak section, crossed at night, is the one leg where winter westerlies can roll the ship for a few hours. Summer crossings are usually calm throughout.

How long is the crossing and what ships run it?

About 17 hours 30 minutes overnight with Go Nordic Cruiseline, on large cruise ferries with restaurants, bars and cabins for all passengers. It sails daily in each direction, evening to late morning.

Which part of the night is the exposed one?

The stretch where the route rounds the top of Denmark and crosses the open Skagerrak, typically in the small hours. If you are motion sensitive, be horizontal in a midship cabin by then and the leg usually passes unnoticed.

Do I need seasickness tablets for this mini cruise?

Most passengers never think about it on this route, but if you are prone, ask a pharmacist or doctor before you travel; motion sickness medicines are generally labelled for use before departure. Mention the overnight format, since drowsiness advice reads differently when sleep is the plan.
