Meta Quest 3S motion sickness: causes and how to stop it

Motion sickness risk on the Meta Quest 3S is rated moderate. It is a standalone VR headset by Meta, released in 2024, with a 96 degree field of view, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and color passthrough.

Meta Quest 3S uses older-style Fresnel lenses (vs Quest 3's pancake lenses) which can cause minor edge distortion that some users find triggers nausea. The lower resolution and 96ยฐ field of view actually means slightly LESS immersion than Quest 3 - which can mean less cybersickness risk for some users. Same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor as Quest 3.

Settings and comfort tip for Meta Quest 3S

If switching from Quest 3 to Quest 3S, the lens difference takes time to adjust to. Stick to seated experiences while adjusting, and use the first-session plan below, which follows Meta's own safety guide for the Quest 3S.

Your first sessions on a new Meta Quest 3S

  1. Get a clear picture first. Meta's guide says to take the headset off, slide the eyecups to one of the three preset lens positions, then put it back on and check the image is clear. Repeat until it is.
  2. Check the comfort rating before you install. Store listings carry one of four labels: Comfortable, Moderate, Intense or Unrated. In the headset, open the app in the Store and scroll down to More Information. Meta rates the default experience, so start with Comfortable titles. Our game-by-game comfort guide shows the store rating for popular titles.
  3. Keep early sessions short. Meta's safety guide gives an example starting point: 30 minutes at most, then a 15 minute break. Lengthen sessions gradually as you get used to it.
  4. Before you move in a game, open its own settings and pick teleport movement, snap turning and the comfort vignette where offered.
  5. Stop at the first sign of discomfort. Meta's guide says not to start again until you have fully recovered.

How to build VR tolerance on Meta Quest 3S

  • Start with stationary or seated experiences until short sessions feel easy
  • Use teleportation rather than smooth locomotion in games
  • Follow the session and break plan above
  • Enable comfort mode and vignette options in any game that offers them
  • Don't push through strong symptoms. Stop and recover.

FAQ

Why does Meta Quest 3S make me feel sick?

VR sickness (cybersickness) is the opposite of traditional motion sickness: your eyes see motion but your body is still. Same sensory mismatch, opposite direction. On Meta Quest 3S, the primary triggers are: older Fresnel lens distortion at edges and smooth locomotion games.

Does VR sickness go away with practice?

For most people it eases with practice. Players call the adapted state VR legs. How long it takes varies widely and no trial has fixed a timeline, so take any number you read as what players report. Keep sessions short and regular, and stop at the first wave of queasiness: pushing through strong symptoms slows adaptation.

The pacing plan is in how to get your VR legs.
