Why the Talgo (natural tilt) feels the way it does
Tilt: Passive
Natural pendular tilt. The air suspension is mounted high above the centre of gravity, so each low-slung car swings gently into the curve by physics alone, with no sensors, no actuators and no tilt computer.
The tilting-train literature points at two things: how much a carriage rolls, and when it rolls relative to the curve your inner ear feels. Active systems measure and react, and any lag or anticipation creates a mismatch. Talgo's natural tilt cannot lag, because it is not controlled: the car bodies hang low between tall suspension towers and swing into each curve as the lateral force arrives. The tilt angles are also smaller than a Pendolino's. The trade is speed: natural tilt buys less cornering pace than a full active system, which is why operators used it for comfort as much as for timetables.
