Does the Alfa Pendular make you motion sick?
The Alfa Pendular is Portugal's tilting flagship, a Pendolino-family train that has linked Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve at up to 220 km/h since 1999. The name gives the mechanism away: pendular means it leans. On the faster, straighter stretches of the Northern Line the tilt has little to do, and the ride is calm; where the route curves, susceptible riders get the familiar active-tilt sensation of a carriage rolling around a level-looking interior.

Why the Alfa Pendular feels the way it does

Portugal chose tilt for the same reason Britain and Italy did: the existing lines curve, and straightening them costs more than leaning the train. The Alfa Pendular is an Italian-lineage Pendolino adapted for CP, so everything the tilting-train research says about the type applies here, with the softening factor that much of the Lisbon to Porto trunk is comparatively fast, modernised alignment where the tilt is not constantly working. The Algarve legs and the northern extensions ride more like classic line.

No, the tilt works where the line curves. On the modernised, faster stretches of the Lisbon to Porto trunk there is not much for it to do; on curvier sections toward Braga and the Algarve, it earns its name.
