Is the Rauma line rough?
The Rauma line drops down Romsdalen for 114 km past the Trollveggen wall, crossing Kylling bridge nearly 60 m above the river, and manages its steepest descent by doubling back on itself, including turns carved inside tunnels. It is a short, theatrical ride: under two hours, with the concentrated winding packed into the Verma descent.

Why the Rauma line moves you the way it does
To lose height into the narrow valley the line reverses direction in horseshoe fashion, part of it inside the mountain, so the river you just crossed reappears on the opposite side, a mild spatial prank your inner ear notices even when your eyes miss it. The descent grade keeps brakes gently on, and the valley walls tower close, which makes the visual motion vivid at modest speeds. The exposure is short enough that few riders get past mild wooziness, and the flat run into Andalsnes finishes the trip calmly.

What helps on board
- When the river switches sides after the mountain horseshoe, that swap is the moment riders notice; watching the reversal happen out the window makes it read as geography instead of wrongness.
- It is a short ride with big windows; keep the valley in frame and the phone in your pocket through the descent.
- Standard light-and-cool preparation is enough for under two hours.
- Pack the drug-free rescue: a sound therapy session through any headphones, with relief in about 90 seconds.
Where to sit is its own question, answered properly in where to sit on a train for motion sickness. And for why trains set people off at all, from sway to reading to tilting stock, see the train motion sickness guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Rauma line rough?
+
No, but the Verma descent is genuinely disorienting for a few minutes: the line doubles back on itself, partly inside tunnels, to lose height into Romsdalen. The whole journey is under two hours, so nothing has time to build.
Why does the valley seem to switch sides?
+
Because it does: the line reverses direction in its horseshoe descent, part of it underground, so you emerge facing the other way. If you were not watching for it, the river appearing on the wrong side is briefly baffling, and that is the moment sensitive inner ears register.
When is the best ride?
+
Summer tourist departures run with commentary and slow-downs at the viewpoints, including Kylling bridge and Trollveggen. The slower pace suits sensitive riders; winter services run the same line faster and emptier.
