Is the Flam Railway (Flamsbana) rough?

The Flam Railway is short and intense: 20 km that drop about 865 m from Myrdal to the fjord at Flam, most of it on a 1 in 18 gradient, which is about 5.5 percent, through 20 tunnels including one that turns inside the mountain. An hour each way is a small motion dose, but it is a concentrated one, with steep pitch, tight curves and repeated tunnel darkness taking turns.

Key facts

  • The Flam Railway is 20.2 km long with an elevation difference of about 865 m; its steepest incline is 1 in 18, and the line has 20 tunnels, 18 of them dug by hand.
  • A turning tunnel spirals in and out of the mountain, a signature of the line's engineering.

Why the Flam Railway (Flamsbana) moves you the way it does

This is one of the steepest standard-gauge adhesion railways anywhere, and you feel the pitch: the carriage floor is noticeably inclined for most of the hour. The tunnels do the rest. Eighteen of the twenty were dug by hand, the line snakes to manage the gradient, and the turning tunnel spirals in and out of the mountain, reversing your sense of direction in the dark, the single most disorienting moment of the trip. The saving grace is brevity: by the time a sensitive rider is genuinely uncomfortable, the fjord is usually in view.

What helps on board

  • The floor is noticeably pitched for most of the hour; stay settled where you can and let the incline read as what it is.
  • The tunnels remove the horizon for stretches; rest your eyes on something fixed inside the coach until daylight hands the fjord view back.
  • One hour each way is a short dose: ride down facing the view and treat the Kjosfossen stop as your reset.
  • Pack the drug-free rescue: a sound therapy session through any headphones, with relief in about 90 seconds.

Where to sit is its own question, answered properly in where to sit on a train for motion sickness. And for why trains set people off at all, from sway to reading to tilting stock, see the train motion sickness guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Flam Railway hard on motion sickness?

+

It is intense but short. The steep gradient, the winding and the 20 tunnels stack real stimulation into a single hour, and the turning tunnel disorients almost everyone slightly. Most riders manage fine precisely because it is over quickly.

What is the turning tunnel?

+

A tunnel that spirals inside the mountain to gain height, so the train exits pointing a different way than it entered. In the dark your inner ear feels the continuous turn while your eyes get nothing, which is the classic recipe for a brief wave of disorientation.

Which direction is easier, up or down?

+

The motion is similar in both directions; the descent keeps brakes on and the climb keeps power on, both smooth. Sensitive riders sometimes prefer the climb simply because the view opens ahead of the train rather than falling away behind it.
