Super Mario Odyssey Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps
Super Mario Odyssey is a 3D platformer with a camera you steer yourself, and almost no settings. Can I Play That? reviewed it in 2019 and found language and a few control options, and nothing aimed at camera comfort. Nintendo's own update notes, as listed on the Super Mario Wiki, add no camera setting either. We found no player reports of motion sickness for this game in the sources we checked, so the risk is marked low.

Why Super Mario Odyssey can trigger motion sickness
Odyssey sends Mario across large open kingdoms, and the camera follows him as he jumps, throws his cap and captures enemies. Many of the kingdoms also contain side-scrolling sections that imitate the original Super Mario Bros., where the view changes from chasing Mario to showing him from the side. With no field of view, blur or shake settings to change, the levers are how the camera is handled, how far you sit from the screen and how long you play.
- A chase camera that follows Mario at speed through large open kingdoms
- Side-scrolling sections where the view changes to a flat, side-on picture
- Quick manual camera turns when you steer the view yourself

Comfort settings in Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey ships no official comfort settings.
Super Mario Odyssey has no camera comfort setting that we could find. Can I Play That? found only language and a few control options in 2019 and wrote that accessibility features do not exist beyond Assist Mode. Assist Mode changes health and guidance, not the camera. The Nintendo Switch 2 update in June 2025 improved image quality and added HDR, and did not add a camera setting.

| Field of view, motion blur, camera shake and head bob | No setting found | None of these appear in the sources we checked. Screen distance and shorter sessions are the levers you have |
One guide explains these settings for every game: how field of view, motion blur, head bob and camera shake trigger motion sickness.

What helps beyond the settings
- Sit farther from the screen, or use a TV instead of holding the console close to your face.
- Take a break after each kingdom, and stop at the first queasy signal.
- Look away from the screen at something still, then breathe slowly until the feeling passes.
The fixes people reach for once they step away from the screen are covered separately, with the trials attached: the remedy verdicts.
Frequently asked questions
Does Super Mario Odyssey have motion sickness settings?
We found none. Can I Play That? reviewed the game in 2019 and found language and a few control options, and the Super Mario Wiki's list of Nintendo's updates shows no camera comfort setting. Assist Mode makes the game easier but does not change the camera.
Why does the view change in some parts of Super Mario Odyssey?
Many kingdoms include side-scrolling sections that imitate the original Super Mario Bros. The view in those sections is flat and side-on, which is a different kind of movement from the chase camera in the rest of the game.
Did the Nintendo Switch 2 update add comfort settings?
No comfort settings are listed. Version 1.4.0, released on June 3, 2025, is listed as improving image quality on the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, and as adding HDR and GameShare support.
