Portal 2 (and Portal) Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps

Portal 2 has no comfort settings and no FOV slider in its menus, and its central mechanic reorients your view in a single frame. Valve ran into the problem during development: Adhesion Gel, which let you walk on walls and ceilings, was cut because playtesters got motion sick. What shipped is the gentler version, and it still gets to people.

Why Portal 2 (and Portal) can trigger motion sickness

A portal changes which way is down with no transition, so your eyes jump to a new orientation while your inner ear registers nothing at all. Flinging routes chain that with long falls and abrupt stops, which is sustained fast self-motion with no matching signal from your body. The cut Adhesion Gel is the clearest evidence the studio saw this coming: walking on walls made playtesters sick, so it did not ship. Portal 2 exposes no comfort options in its menus and no FOV slider, though PC players can change field of view with the cl_fov console command. Beyond that, the levers are how you play rather than what you set.

Comfort settings in Portal 2 (and Portal)

Portal 2 has no comfort menu and no FOV slider. On PC the cl_fov console command is the only way to widen the view, and console versions have no equivalent. Valve did cut the wall-walking Adhesion Gel during development after playtesters got motion sick, so the shipped game is already the milder version. What is left is pacing and off-screen help.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Portal 2 make me motion sick?+

Portals reorient your view in a single frame, so your eyes land somewhere new while your inner ear registers no movement at all. Flinging routes add long falls with abrupt stops. It is a short, sharp version of the mismatch behind all motion sickness, repeated every few seconds in the harder chambers.

Does Portal 2 have an FOV slider?+

Not in the menus. On PC you can change it with the cl_fov console command, and console versions have no equivalent. There is no head bob toggle and no camera shake slider either, so Portal 2 is one of the games where settings are not the answer.

Is it true Valve cut a mechanic because of motion sickness?+

Yes. Adhesion Gel, which let you walk up walls and across ceilings, was cut during development after playtesters got motion sick. It is documented in cut-content archives and on the Portal wiki. The game that shipped is the version that survived that testing.
