Super Mario Galaxy (and Galaxy 2) Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps
Super Mario Galaxy and Galaxy 2 send Mario around small planets where gravity changes direction. We found no camera, field of view, motion blur or shake setting for the Switch release. In 2020 Can I Play That? reviewed Super Mario 3D All-Stars, which includes Galaxy. It said the camera makes for some nauseating and frustrating turns, and that tracking movement was hard in Super Mario 64 and Galaxy. A Nintendo Life review quoted on the Super Mario Wiki says the 2025 release has small camera issues that are slightly more noticeable than when the games first came out.

Why Super Mario Galaxy (and Galaxy 2) can trigger motion sickness
Gravity is the central element of Galaxy's gameplay, so Mario runs upside down and sideways around small worlds and the camera has to turn with him. That turning is the part Can I Play That? flagged in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, where the camera was unchanged from the original games. The 2025 Switch release also lets you move the Star Pointer by tilting the console in handheld mode, which adds hand movement to a picture that is already turning.
- Gravity that changes direction as Mario runs around small planets, with the camera turning to follow
- Camera turns that Can I Play That? called nauseating in the 2020 Super Mario 3D All-Stars release
- Tilting the console to move the Star Pointer in handheld mode

What helps beyond the settings
- Sit farther from the screen, and play docked on a TV if handheld play makes the picture swing.
- Take a break after each galaxy, and stop at the first queasy signal.
- Look away from the screen at something still, then breathe slowly until the feeling passes.
The fixes people reach for once they step away from the screen are covered separately, with the trials attached: the remedy verdicts.
