Grand Theft Auto V (and GTA Online) Motion Sickness: Why It Happens & What Helps

Grand Theft Auto V is played in third person, with a first-person mode you switch on. Almost every comfort option is for that first-person mode. Rockstar's own tips name head bobbing, combat rolls and ragdoll camera motion as the effects to turn off.

Why Grand Theft Auto V (and GTA Online) can trigger motion sickness

First person adds camera motion you can switch off: the view bobs with each step, moves when you are hit, and has its own combat rolls. Rockstar says turning off First Person Ragdoll decreases the camera motion when you are hit, and turning off Combat Rolls and Head Bobbing minimizes some of the more intense motion effects. The field of view slider changes first person only.

  • Head bobbing in first person: the camera moves up and down with each step
  • First Person Ragdoll and Combat Roll: extra camera motion when you are hit or roll
  • Depth of field blur: on PC the in-game Off setting does not remove it completely

Comfort settings in Grand Theft Auto V (and GTA Online)

Grand Theft Auto V (and GTA Online) ships some comfort settings, but not a full set.

The field of view slider applies to first person only, so third person has no field of view fix. PCGamingWiki lists the first-person range as 45-55 degrees vertical, which is narrow. The in-game depth of field Off setting does not fully disable that blur on PC.

SettingWhereRecommendation
First Person Head BobbingSettings > CameraOff. Rockstar says it minimizes some of the more intense first-person motion
First Person RagdollSettings > CameraOff. It decreases the camera motion when you are hit
First Person Combat RollSettings > CameraOff. Rockstar groups it with head bobbing as an intense first-person effect
First Person On Foot Field of ViewSettings > CameraRaise it. It changes first person only, and third person has no slider
First Person Vehicle Auto-CenterSettings > CameraOff. Stops the view re-centering on its own while you drive in first person
In-Game Depth Of Field EffectsSettings > Display (PlayStation 5)Off. On PC it does not remove the effect completely

One guide explains these settings for every game: how field of view, motion blur, head bob and camera shake trigger motion sickness.

What helps beyond the settings

  • Switch to third person if first person bothers you: V on PC, Touchpad on PlayStation, Select on Xbox
  • Play in short sessions and stop at the first sign of queasiness
  • Look away from the screen at a still, distant point and slow your breathing

The fixes people reach for once they step away from the screen are covered separately, with the trials attached: the remedy verdicts.

Frequently asked questions

Does GTA V have a motion sickness setting?

Yes, in Settings > Camera rather than as one switch: you can turn off First Person Head Bobbing, First Person Ragdoll and First Person Combat Roll, and raise First Person On Foot Field of View. Rockstar says turning off Combat Rolls and Head Bobbing minimizes some of the more intense first-person motion effects.

Why does GTA V make me dizzy in first person?

First person has its own camera effects: head bobbing as you walk, camera motion when you are hit, and combat rolls. The view is also narrow. PCGamingWiki lists the first-person field of view as 45-55 degrees vertical.

Do these settings apply to GTA Online and FiveM?

GTA Online uses the same Settings tab in the Pause Menu as the story. FiveM is a role-play modification for Grand Theft Auto V, so the same camera options are the place to start on PC.
