Do headphones help with motion sickness?

Last reviewed October 31, 2026

Headphones on their own do not stop motion sickness, but what you play through them can help. Music eased nausea in two lab studies, as long as the listener liked it, and audio lets you put the screen away, which removes one of the biggest triggers. Sound therapy apps such as Dizzout play precisely calibrated audio through any headphones and are built for use once you already feel sick.

Motion sickness is a common, temporary response in healthy people. Your inner ear feels the movement while your eyes report a still cabin or a phone screen, and the brain reacts to the mismatch with nausea. Headphones cannot change that by themselves. They change what your eyes and attention are doing, and that is where the help comes from.

Does wearing AirPods help with motion sickness?

AirPods help the same way any headphones do: through what you listen to and what you stop looking at. The brand, the fit and the noise cancelling mode make no known difference. If you have an iPhone, the separate Vehicle Motion Cues setting puts moving dots on the screen for when you must look at it. That is a visual aid and works only while you watch the screen. Audio works with your eyes on the road or closed.

Is there music for car sickness?

There is no special playlist, and that is the useful finding. In a crossover trial of 24 adults, a music tape raised the time people tolerated nauseating motion from 9.2 to 10.4 minutes, about the same benefit as controlled breathing. In a second study of 93 volunteers watching a ride video, music reduced sickness only when the listener rated it pleasant, whatever kind of music it was. So play what you like, download it before the trip, and skip anything a stranger labelled calming if it does not appeal to you. The full evidence is on our music remedy page.

Is there a sound that stops motion sickness?

Some apps are built around a sound session for motion sickness. Dizzout plays precisely calibrated audio through any wired or Bluetooth headphones, on iPhone and Android. It is meant for the moment symptoms start, it works with your eyes closed, and Dizzout states relief in about 90 seconds. It is drug-free, free to download, with a paid subscription for full access. Samsung Hearapy is a free Android app that plays one short sound session before a trip. The music studies above tested ordinary music, not either app. See what a Dizzout session is and how Hearapy compares.

Can headphones cause motion sickness?

Headphones do not cause motion sickness. What usually does is the screen that comes with them: watching a film or scrolling a feed in a moving car, on a boat or in VR. If you feel worse with headphones on, check what you are looking at first. If noise cancelling makes your ears feel blocked, switch to transparency mode or turn it off. If you get dizzy with headphones on while you are standing still, that is not motion sickness, and the next section applies.

What helps, in order

  1. 1.Look out, not down

Sit where you can see forward and fix your eyes on the horizon or a distant point. The CDC Yellow Book describes a horizon view as giving some protection in cars, buses and on ships.

  2. 2.Swap the screen for audio

Put the phone or book away and play a podcast, an audiobook or music instead. Reading is one of the strongest triggers, and audio keeps you occupied without it.

  3. 3.Play music you like

In a 93-person study, music reduced sickness only when the listener rated it pleasant. There is no correct genre. Pick your own playlist and download it before you go.

  4. 4.Get fresh, cool air

Open a window or aim a vent at your face. The NHS lists fresh air among the first things to try.

  5. 5.Breathe slowly

Breathe out for longer than you breathe in, and keep going. Controlled breathing gave a similar benefit to music in the same lab trial.

  6. 6.Try a sound therapy app

Dizzout is a drug-free app that plays precisely calibrated audio through any wired or Bluetooth headphones. It is built for use after symptoms start, and Dizzout states relief in about 90 seconds.

  7. 7.Plan medicine ahead if you need it

Antihistamine tablets and the scopolamine patch work best taken before travel and can cause drowsiness. Ask a pharmacist which one suits you.

When to see a doctor

Motion sickness eases once the motion stops. Get medical advice if dizziness or nausea happens when you are not moving, lasts days after a trip, comes with hearing loss, ringing in one ear, ear pain or a severe headache, or if you cannot keep fluids down.

Frequently asked questions

Can I listen to podcasts in the car if I get car sick?

Yes, and it is one of the better swaps you can make. A podcast or audiobook keeps you busy without asking your eyes to stay on a still page, which is what makes reading in a moving car so hard. Keep your eyes on the road ahead or out of the window while you listen.

Do noise cancelling headphones help with motion sickness?

No study has tested noise cancelling for motion sickness, so there is no reason to buy a pair for it. What you play matters more than how well the headphones block noise. If noise cancelling makes your ears feel blocked or you feel worse with it on, switch to transparency mode or turn it off.

Does Dizzout need special headphones?

No. Dizzout works with any standard headphones, wired or Bluetooth, including AirPods and other earbuds. There is no extra hardware to buy.

Can I use Dizzout while driving?

No. Dizzout is for passengers. If you are driving and start to feel sick, pull over somewhere safe before you do anything else.

What volume should I use?

A comfortable level where you can still hear the people around you, the driver and any crew announcements. Louder is not better for motion sickness, and keeping one ear aware of the cabin is safer on boats and planes.
