When to take motion sickness medicine: a timing planner

Most motion sickness tablets are taken 30 minutes to 2 hours before departure, and the scopolamine patch goes on at least 4 hours before. The planner below turns the label's wording into clock times for your trip: enter when you leave, how long you travel, and what you have, and it lays out when to take each, when a repeat window opens, and when a patch is due for a change. Timing only, never amounts.

Dizzout is not a medical provider: we are not doctors or pharmacists. The information here is a general summary drawn from sources such as the FDA-approved label and other public health resources, and it may not reflect the most current changes; the official product label is the authoritative source. Whether any medicine is right for you, and how much to take, are individual decisions that depend on your health, age, and other medicines. We do not provide dosing instructions: always read the product label and follow its directions. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting, stopping, or changing any medication, and never disregard or delay professional medical advice because of something you read here. If you think you may have a medical emergency, contact a doctor or your local emergency number immediately.

Frequently asked questions

When should I take Dramamine before a cruise or a boat?

The Dramamine Original label directs the first dose about 30 to 60 minutes before travel, so for a 10:00 departure that is between 9:00 and 9:30. The less drowsy version (meclizine) is taken about 1 hour before. Many cruisers take the first dose before boarding rather than before the ship sails, because boarding is when the motion starts. Amounts and daily maximums are on the label. Dramamine: the label and its sources.

How long before a cruise do I put the scopolamine patch on?

The US label directs applying it at least 4 hours before the effect is needed, and the NHS notes it can take up to about 6 hours to work fully, so it is often applied the evening before sailing. One patch is formulated for about 3 days; for a longer cruise the label directs a new patch behind the other ear after 72 hours. In the US it is prescription only. Can I take two motion sickness medicines together?

Taking two motion sickness medicines together is a pharmacist's question, not a timeline's. Dramamine Original and Bonine are both antihistamines, and the planner refuses to combine them: when two medicines are ticked it shows each label's own timing and a warning instead. Can you take Bonine and Dramamine together?.

What if I forgot and the trip has started?

Some labels allow a dose after the start of the journey or at the onset of nausea (Kwells says so in as many words); others work best taken ahead. Check the label in your hand. For the nausea itself, the drug-free steps work from the moment it starts: eyes on the horizon, slow breathing, cool air. The 90-second steps for right now.

Does this give amounts for children?

No. The planner gives timing only and never an amount, for anyone. Children's products and ages are on each label and are a question for a pediatrician or pharmacist. Motion sickness medicine for kids: what the labels say.

Is the plan saved anywhere?

No account and no upload. The plan lives in the link, which encodes your departure, trip length and the boxes you ticked, so sending the link rebuilds it for whoever packs the bag. The calendar file is generated on your phone.
